This skill is important because we need to be able to recognise when negative thoughts creep in and start to undermine our confidence. Last week we practiced using the deep breath release action before we entered the box and this technique is designed to help us let go of the negative energy and stay calm. These first two weeks have been slowly building this new habit to develop the “never give up” attitude during our workouts and now it is time to take the skills we learned last week and use them in a workout.
Week 3 – Using release actions in a workout
The task for this week is to practice using the deep breath release action once during your next workout.
Crossfit is constantly varied, different movements, workout structures, time caps and rep schemes. However, I can almost guarantee that during every workout there will come a point where we want to slow down or rest. At this point the negative thoughts will be swirling around our minds.
This is the perfect time to practice using the deep breath release action. Use it just like we practiced for the past week, breath out all the negativity and breath in calming blue air.
This week is focused on practicing the process of identifying negative thoughts and then using the release action in a workout setting. The more often we practice this process the more natural it will become and eventually we will do this automatically allowing us to push through the tough reps and show our ability to never give up and keep on fighting.

Reminders
Workouts can be hectic. When we are trying to move as fast as possible and working as hard as we can, it can be easy to forget to practice the release action. The best way to ensure we remember to practice is to make a visual reminder. The reminder I have found to be most effective is to put a little bit of tape around one of my fingers, so when completing the workout I see it and this reminds me to practice the release action. Feel free to design your own reminder, just make sure it is something you will see during the workout.
