The Fittest Woman on Earth, Tia-Clair Toomey, took only a short break from competing. One month after proving to be the best at the CrossFit Games 2017 took a part in the 2017 Commonwealth and Oceania Weightlifting Championships. The competition was a qualification event to the 2018 Commonwealth Games next April.
Toomey (58kg) finished with a 75kg snatch and 102kg clean & jerk for a 177kg total and would end up in 3rd place overall. Australian teammate Erika Yamasaki took 2nd with a 180kg total. Jenly Wini (Solomon Islands) ended up on the top of the podium with an 87kg snatch, 109kg clean & jerk for a 196kg total.
With the win, Wini secured an automatic qualification to compete in the 58kg weight category at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Toomey and Yamasaki have another opportunity in December to qualify.
CrossFit Games athlete Alethea Boon also competed in the 58kg weight class. Boon finished with an 80kg snatch, 96kg clean & jerk for a 176kg total.¹ Few months after surgery of her devastating Achilles rupture suffered during the 2016 CrossFit Games, Boon showed that she got what it takes to be a champion, placing 21st at the 2017 CrossFit Games in August, mere months after surgery.
“I was feeling a bit unwell so unfortunately I didn’t hit the numbers I wanted to. But it’s an opportunity to learn…”, said Boon.
