My Body Does Amazing Things and Crossfit Proves It To Me Every Time

I’m sure every person reading, women and men alike, can relate or perhaps used to relate to this before Crossfit. While I still have areas I’d like to see improved upon, I’ve come to the realization that my body does some pretty amazing things for me, and Crossfit proves that to me every time I step in the box.

I read an article recently that suggested the idea of drawing a heart around your problem area so that every time you step from the shower you see that part of your body in the mirror and remind yourself of the amazing feats it’s made that day, and in your life for that matter.

As an example, drawing a heart around your belly (in permanent marker), if it’s not quite where you want it to be, and admiring the heart realizing that without your core you couldn’t do a single movement in the Crossfit box, you couldn’t nourish yourself without the digestive systems that rests inside – and for many of us we would not have our children without the amazing parts that reside inside.

Admire and appreciate your parts for what they do for you, not necessarily what you wish they looked like.

This has been an amazing catharsis for me. I’ve long been a person who looked in the mirror and only saw the negatives – the troubled areas. But after trying this exercise I’ve come to appreciate my body in a new way. A way that respects the action and not just the being. The human body is an amazingly complex organism that should be cherished regardless of exterior flaws.

When you’ve been participating in Crossfit for a while it’s easy to forget how you felt the first time you stepped out of the box; that next day after your first Crossfit WOD. You were sore, and probably had a hard time with stairs and toilets! You realized in that moment (of agony) that you’d really accomplished something. Something hard enough that you were going to think about it, whether you wanted to or not, for a few days.

After years doing Crossfit you don’t achieve that same level of pain every day (at least I don’t, and am betting most of you don’t either); but the next time you are sore don’t gloss over the feeling – relish it. Take a moment to revel in your soreness, and imagine all the thousands of tiny tears you’ve enacted upon your muscles. Imagine the repair your body is undergoing in that moment. Take a pause, remind yourself to take a moment to appreciate your parts, even the ones you’re still working on.
